Controls

SWD industrial finned tubular heaters should always be thermostatically controlled.  The SWD range is available with and without a built in thermostat.

Models with the prefix SWD-A have a built-in thermostat.  The thermostat is adjustable between 5°C and 30°C by means of an external dial mounted onto the lid of the terminal enclosure.  A ‘frost protection’ setting is also provided.

 

 

Remote Mounted Thermostat

Models with the prefix SWD-U do not have a built-in thermostat.  These models can be controlled by means of a remote mounted thermostat.  When selecting the most suitable thermostat, care must be taken to ensure that the switching capacity of the thermostat is suitable for the heater in question.  Where the load of the heater exceeds the switching capacity of the thermostat or where a three phase heater is installed, a suitably rated contactor will be required.

BN Thermic’s RST-EX thermostat is rated IP54 and is therefore suitable for damp conditions.  The RST-EX has an adjustable range between 5°C and 35°C and a switching capacity of 15A (230V) meaning that is can switch a 3kW 230V heater directly with larger loads and three phase loads requiring a suitably rated contactor.

BN Thermic’s famous HC-T2 Hard Case industrial and public area thermostats provide rugged tamperproof and vandal resistant control.  Hard Case thermostats require a special tool to gain access the temperature adjustment knob.  Where required the HC-T2 can be used with a remote sensor (model HC-S2).  The sensor is rated IP55 and is therefore suitable for damp conditions.

ENQUIRY FORM

SWD heaters are suitable for maintaining background heat or comfort heat in industrial buildings including damp and corrosive environments.  The heaters operate by natural convection and are therefore not well suited to buildings with a high roof.

In simple terms the output of the SWD heater or heaters must be greater than the heat losses from the building during periods of cold weather.  A small amount of heat is lost through the walls, ceilings and floors with more significant losses through windows and doors.

HEAT CALCULATOR

The estimated heat loss figure is the absolute minimum kW output that you should consider installing.  We would suggest adding approximately 50% to this figure to allow for an acceptable warm up time in cold conditions as well as making allowances for exceptional weather conditions and possible errors in the original data used in the estimate.

Having established the minimum kW output required, select the minimum number of heaters needed to meet the kW requirement. 

Selection should be made from the following table ensuring that the selected heaters are compatible with the voltage supply.  Where possible, we would recommend heaters with a built-in thermostat although other control options are available (see control tab).

The use of SWG safety guards is always recommended where personnel can access the heaters.
