How it Works

How it operates

The OUH2 industrial fan heater is in essence an extremely simple heating device. The heater’s powerful motor draws air through the air inlet, over the heating elements and out through the front outlet. 

Depending on the model, an OUH2 industrial fan heater will require a 230V 1ph or 400V 3ph and neutral supply.  Electrical connections are made in the spacious terminal enclosure and a number of cable entry ‘knockouts’ are provided for this purpose.  A fused control circuit, including a contactor, is built into the heater.

Because the OUH2’s fan moves a high volume of air, the temperature rise for any given ‘pass’ is not particularly high.  For this reason the OUH2 is not suitable for ‘spot heating’ specific targets within poorly heated or unheated area.  However this characteristic makes the OUH2 ideally suited to raising the temperature of large volumes of air.

Where it is used

OUH2 industrial fan heaters have been relied upon in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.  Probably the most common application is warehousing either to provide a comfortable working environment for the staff or to protect the product from the effects of low temperatures.  However OUH2 industrial fan heaters have also been used in gymnasiums, factories etc., in fact anywhere that require the ultimately robust and reliable method of space heating.  Customers include the nuclear power industry, major supermarket chains as well as major petrochemical companies.

How it warms a space

The key to the OUH2 industrial fan heaters effectiveness is air circulation.  As previously stated, the temperature rise across the heating elements in a single ‘pass’ is nor especially high.  However the OUH2 industrial fan heater moves such a high volume of air that it quickly ‘processes’ the air within the building raising the air temperature and providing an even temperature distribution.

How it is mounted and positioned

Using the specially designed bracket an OUH2 can be ceiling or wall mounted.  The bracket also provides a variety of discharge angles.  Alternatively the heater can be suspended from chains and a set of hooks are provided for this purpose.

When a single heater is installed, it should be mounted on the longer of the walls and as centrally as possible.  In larger spaces where more than one heater is needed, the heaters should be evenly distributed.

OUH2 Mounting Possibilities

Safety features

The OUH2 industrial fan heater has a safety grille on both air inlet and outlet making it impossible for personnel to touch the fan or heating elements.

The control circuit incorporates a heat purge device which will clear residual heat from the heater and an over-temperature device which will switch off the heater should the airflow be obstructed.

Use of a Destratification unit

When using OUH industrial fan heaters in a building with a roof height in excess of 4m, the installation of a DSU destratification device is strongly recommended.  This device will recycle warm air that has accumulated at high level thereby reducing heating bills by up to 30%.

 

 

 

Control concepts

Detailed control options are detailed elsewhere however we would like to stress that OUH industrial fan heaters should always be thermostatically controlled.  These are the most commonly used methods of control.

OUH2 Factory Fitted Thermostat

 

 

Factory fitted thermostat.  This is the simplest method and keeps external wiring and installation time to a minimum

 

 

RST-TP Tamperproof Thermostat

 

 

Remote mounted thermostat.  This approach will improve control accuracy and will allow easier adjustment of the temperature set-point.

Timer control.  A programmable timer used in conjunction with thermostatic control can significantly improve economy. 

 

Controls

Controls (for all standard models)

OUH2 industrial fan heaters can be controlled individually or as a group using a ‘master’/‘slave’ arrangement.  When controlling multiple heaters, external control devices should be connected to one heater in the group which becomes the ‘master’.  This heater is then connected to all the other heaters in the group in a control ‘daisy chain’.  Power is connected to each heater individually.

The OUH2-S provides a simple method of switching a heater or a group of heaters on and off.  It also provides a ‘fan only’ setting to circulate unheated air in summer. The OUH2-S can be remote mounted or fitted to the rear of a heater.

Every heater is fitted with an adjustable thermostat providing the simplest means of temperature control. 

It is often desirable to use these thermostats for temperature control even when a group of heaters are connected in a control daisy chain.  In this way each heater can respond to the temperature of the surrounding air, while the group of heaters is controlled by a single OUH2-S switch and possible programmable timer and/or frost thermostat.

 

 

Temperature Control using Remote Mounted Thermostat

When required, an individual heater or a group of heaters can be controlled by a remote mounted thermostat.  There are several options.

To prevent wilful or casual adjustment of temperature set point, we recommend the RST-TP tamperproof thermostat.  The set-point adjustment knob is concealed under the thermostat’s cover and optional ‘shear-off’ fixing screws are provided for complete security.

BN Thermic’s famous Hard Case industrial and public area thermostats provide rugged tamperproof and vandal resistant control.  Hard Case thermostats require a special tool to gain access the temperature adjustment knob.

 

 

 

 

Tamperproof wall-mounted thermostat with set-back (industrial grade)

A Hard Case thermostat is available with all the features of the standard model but with two set-points: high (comfort) and low (set-back).  Typically this device would be used to provide comfort heating when a building is occupied and frost protection at other times.  There are two means of switching between comfort and set-back.

Operation Mode One

Use the side mounted button to activate the built-in, programmable timer.  The Hard Case thermostat will then control at the ‘comfort’ set-point until the pre-programmed time period has elapsed at which point it will revert to the default ‘set-back’ temperature.

Frost protection can be provided by means of an FST2-IN remote mounted frost thermostat.  This device can be connected to an individual heater or a group of heaters and will override the setting of the OUH2-S switch and/or PROTIM-7 timer (if used).

The PROTIM-7 programmable timer provides 7-day programmable control for a heater or a group of heaters.  When used with the Hard Case HC-ST2 it can switch temperature control between ‘comfort’ and ‘set-back’ (see above).

Controls for ‘No Neutral’ Models

‘No Neutral’ models can be ordered with or without a factory fitted adjustable thermostat.  If preferred, temperature control can be provided by any of the above remote-mounted thermostats.

‘No Neutral’ models cannot be controlled as a group meaning that a dedicated thermostat is required for each heater.

In simple terms the output of the installed OUH2 industrial fan heater or heaters must be greater than the heat losses from the building during periods of cold weather.  A small amount of heat is lost through the walls, ceilings and floors with more significant losses through windows and doors.

HEAT LOSS TOOL

The estimated heat loss figure is the absolute minimum kW output that you should consider installing.  We would suggest adding approximately 50% to this figure to allow for an acceptable warm up time in cold conditions as well as making allowances for exceptional weather conditions and possible errors in the original data used in the estimate.

Once the target kW has been estimated it is generally as simple as selecting the minimum quantity of heater required to provide that output.  Select from the following table.

For perfect heat distribution the combined air volume flow rate of the selected heaters should also be considered.  Ideally the total air volume processed by the heaters every hour should be at least four times the total air volume in the building.  In some cases therefore, you may choose to select a larger number of lower output heaters in order to increase the total quantity of air processed every hour.

When using OUH2 industrial fan heaters in a building with a roof height in excess of 4m, the installation of a DSU destratification device is strongly recommended.  This device will recycle warm air that has accumulated at high level thereby reducing heating bills by up to 30%.  It should also be noted that DSU destratification devices have provide very high air volume flow rates and often enable the ‘four times total air volume’ target to be achieved without needing to consider additional heaters.
