How it Works

How it operates

The WHE compact heavy duty fan heater is in essence an extremely simple heating device. The heater’s powerful motor draws air through the air inlet, over the heating element and out through the outlet.  Both inlet and outlet are located on the front face of the heater.

Temperature control is generally by means of a built-in thermostat which can be made tamperproof to avoid casual set-point adjustment especially in public areas.

Where it is used

The WHE’s compact design makes it especially well-suited to applications where space is at a premium such as toll booths and crane cabs. The heavy duty steel case means that it can be installed in both public areas and industrial premises.

How it warms a space

The WHE compact heavy duty fan heater will build up a body of warm air within a confined space by means of air circulation.  The temperature rise across the heating element in a single ‘pass’ is not especially high.  However the heater moves a high volume of air and quickly ‘processes’ the air within the space raising the air temperature and providing an even temperature distribution. 

We would not recommend the WHE compact heavy duty fan heater as a ‘spot’ heater.

How it is mounted and positioned

WHE compact heavy duty fan heaters are specifically designed for recessed mounting however surface mounting is easily achieved by means of the optional surface mount box.

The heater can be mounted in any one of four orientations (two vertical and two horizontal).  This means that the air discharge can be upwards, downwards, to the left or to the right.

Controls

We would strongly recommend that a WHE Compact Heavy Duty Fan heater is thermostatically controlled.  This is generally achieved by specifying a model with a built-in thermostat (add a ‘T’ suffix to the model number.

The set-point of the built-in thermostat is most commonly adjusted by a panel front knob.  However when required the thermostat can be made tamperproof by removing the knob and using the plug provided to prevent access to the thermostat itself.

On occasions it may be necessary to use a remote-mounted thermostat.  BN Thermic can offer a wide range of suitable devices:

WHE compact heavy duty fan heaters can be factory fitted with an adjustable thermostat.  This approach keeps external wiring and installation time to a minimum.

To specify a factory fitted thermostat, add the suffix ‘T’ to the heater model number.

To prevent wilful or casual adjustment of temperature set point, we recommend the RST-TP tamperproof thermostat.  The set-point adjustment knob is concealed under the thermostat’s cover and optional ‘shear-off’ fixing screws are provided for complete security.

Model: HC-ST2

A Hard Case thermostat is available with all the features of the standard model but with two set-points: high (comfort) and low (set-back).  Typically this device would be used to provide comfort heating when a building is occupied and frost protection at other times.  There are two means of switching between comfort and set-back.

 

 

Operation Mode One

Use the side mounted button to activate the built-in, programmable timer.  The Hard Case thermostat will then control at the ‘comfort’ set-point until the pre-programmed time period has elapsed at which point it will revert to the default ‘set-back’ temperature.

Operation Mode Two

Use a remote timer (see below) to switch between ‘comfort’ and ‘set-back’ to match the building’s pattern of use.

In simple terms the output of the installed WHE industrial fan heater or heaters must be greater than the heat losses from the building during periods of cold weather.  A small amount of heat is lost through the walls, ceilings and floors with more significant losses through windows and doors.

HEAT CALCULATOR

The estimated heat loss figure is the absolute minimum kW output that you should consider installing.  We would suggest adding approximately 50% to this figure to allow for an acceptable warm up time in cold conditions as well as making allowances for exceptional weather conditions and possible errors in the original data used in the estimate.

Once the target kW has been estimated, select the minimum quantity of heater required to provide that output.  Select either the 230V or 110V model, depending on the voltage supply available.
