How it works

CRJ self-regulating cable is designed protect water pipes from freezing. 

The heart of a self-regulating cable is a special polymer containing carbon particles.  Two bus wires run in parallel along the length of the cable with one connected to ‘live’ and the other to ‘neutral’.  The heating circuit is completed through the polymer along the entire length of the cable.  As the surrounding temperature reduces, the polymer contracts creating many electrical paths across the integrated carbon particles and increasing heat output.  When temperatures increase the polymer expands reducing the electrical paths with a corresponding reduction in heat output.

The combination of self-regulating technology and parallel construction has several advantages.

  • The cable can be reduced in length without affecting the watts per metre output
  • The cable can be allowed to touch and cross without creating ‘hot spots’
  • The output will reduce as the need for heating reduces with the corresponding reduction in running costs.

Controls

CRJ cable is self-regulating meaning that it its output will decrease as the surrounding temperature decreases.  However as it will never actually switch itself off, some form of remote switching mechanism is required to avoid wasting energy and incurring unnecessarily high running costs.

Cable Selection

Use the following tables to select the correct output and length of cable for your application.  Usually a single run of the appropriate output cable will suffice however in some circumstances the cable should be applied in an evenly spaced helix.  Table one also indicates the thickness of insulation which should cover both pipe and heating cable.

Selection of Ancillary items

Termination kit

One CRJ-T1 termination kit will be required per circuit.  The kit includes the necessary crimps and shrink-on material to prepare one end of the cable for electrical connection and to effectively seal the far end.  The kit also includes a nylon gland suitable for making a moisture tight seal into a suitable terminal enclosure.

Splice kit

One CRJ-S1 slice kit will be required for each splice or T joint.  .  The kit includes the necessary crimps and shrink-on material to join two lengths of cable and to effectively seal the far end. 

Fixing Tape

PF-T fixing tape is supplied in 33m rolls and is ideal for fixing heating cable to the pipe.  We recommend securing the cable at 200mm intervals.

Aluminium Tape

When heating a plastic pipe, the pipe should be wrapped in aluminium tape before the heating cable is installed.  AL-50 is supplied in 45m x 50mm rolls.

Warning Labels

PF-L warning labels are supplied as a pack of 10 and should be fixed to the outside of the insulation at regular intervals.

Thermostats

To ensure maximum economy, the use of a frost thermostat is strongly recommended.  Select from the FST2-IN for indoor installations and the FST-EX for outdoor installation.
