Features & Benefits

Feature Benefit

300W/m² power density

Sufficient output to cope with extreme conditions

Heating cable pre-assembled in evenly spaced loops

Quick installation and even heat distribution

13 different mats from 1.5m² to 20m²

Easy to select the correct mat for a project without waste

Pre-wired asymmetrical lower leads: 5m at one end, 5m plus the length of the mat at the other end

It is always easy to bring both power leads to the same point

Continuous earth foil

Avoids the risk of electric shock (for example when drilling into a driveway)

How it works

ERC snow and ice melting mats will prevent the accumulation of snow and ice in outdoor locations ensuring unhindered access to both domestic and commercial premises. Typical applications include: driveways, parking areas and access ramps for the disabled.

Most commonly the mats are installed into concrete although installation into fine washed sand under pavers is equally effective.  The mats must never be directly covered in asphalt.  However asphalt can be applied to a heated area provided the heating mat is covered by at least 30mm of concrete and the asphalt temperature does not exceed 140°C as it is poured.

To avoid excessive running costs, thermostatic control is strongly recommended.  Ideally the thermostat should monitor both temperature and moisture and therefore only switch on the heating when there is a real risk of snow or ice accumulation.  BN Thermic’s ERC-T1 is an ideal means of control.

Controls

ERC snow and ice melting mats should be thermostatically controlled to prevent excessive running costs.  There are two options:

FST2-EX - Frost thermostat 20A for outdoor use

FST2-EX

FST2-EX Basic Frost Thermostat

The FST2-EX is rated IP66 and is recommended for outdoor installations. It can switch loads up to 20A directly and larger loads up via a suitably rated contactor.  This type of control is frequently used for smaller installations.  However it should be recognised that if the FST2-EX is the only means of control, the heating mats will be switched on whenever there is a low temperature whether or not ice or snow are present.

ERC-T1 Sensor

ERC-T1 Sensor

ERC-T1

The ERC-T1 is the recommended means of controlling ERC snow and ice melting mats. It is estimated that the ERC-T1 will reduce energy consumption by approximately 80% when compared to a basic air temperature sensing thermostat.

The ERC-T1 is installed inside a building and is supplied with a sensor for outdoor installation.  The sensor is installed at ground level and monitors both temperature and moisture ensuring that the heating will only be switched on when conditions are likely to produce snow or ice accumulation.

The ERC-T1 will switch loads up to 16A directly and larger loads via a suitably rated contactor.

Contactors

A suitably rated contactor allows a thermostat to control a larger load than its normal switching capacity.

Selection

If you would like the experts at BN Thermic to select a snow and ice prevention system for you, please send an email to sales@bnthermic.co.uk  with details of your application and we will respond with a detailed proposal.

Selecting the correct ERC snow and ice melting mats is very simple.  Measure the area to be protected in m² and select the appropriate mat or mats required to heat that area.  Remember that the mat can be cut at any point to suit the shape of the area to be heated but the cable itself must never be cut.

When protecting a driveway, it is common practice to heat two ‘tyre tracks’ rather than the entire area.

ERC snow and ice melting mats can be installed in concrete or in fine washed sand under pavers.  When installing in concrete, care must be taken not to cross expansion joints.
