How it works

BN Thermic electric underfloor heating is installed above the existing sub-floor and underneath the selected floor surface turning the entire floor into a low temperature radiant heater. 

BN Thermic underfloor systems offer the following advantages over conventional heating systems such as radiators:

Heating distribution

Because the heating effect is spread over the entire floor area, the room is heated evenly.  Not only does this maximise levels of comfort but saves energy because it is not necessary to overheat some areas of a room to achieve an acceptable temperature in others.

No significant temperature gradient

With conventional convection based heating systems the temperature at high levels (i.e. above head height) is considerably higher than it is at low level.  As these higher temperatures have no benefit to the occupants of the room, the energy consumed in generating them is entirely wasted.  Underfloor heating is a radiant system which creates virtually no temperature gradient meaning that the temperatures at low level are the same as at high level.

No draughts or air currents

Conventional heating systems rely on air movement to warm a room.  This is not the case with an underfloor system resulting in the elimination of draughts.  This feature also eliminates the potential for the heating system to lift up dust and allergens making underfloor heating popular with asthma sufferers.

Low thermostat setting

The gentle radiant heating from an underfloor heating system will mean that people will experience a temperature slightly higher than the surrounding air temperature.  This effect means that thermostats can be set a few degrees lower than with the equivalent conventional system.

Every room individually controllable

With an electric underfloor heating system it is easy to programme every room to accurately reflect patterns of use.  The energy saving potential of this feature is considerable.

Does not use wall space

The elimination of radiators is the interior designer’s dream being particularly significant is apartments where space can be very limited.

Safety

An underfloor heating system operates at a very low temperature level completely eliniating the risk of burns even for the frail and elderly.

Thermostats

BN Thermic underfloor heating systems must be controlled by an approved thermostat.   All our thermostats are supplied with a floor probe (with plastic conduit) and have a built-in air sensor.  Primary temperature control can be by either the floor probe or the air sensor.

The A16C has a smart uncluttered appearance with a dial for temperature adjustment and an on/off switch.  The A16C can switch loads up to 3.4kW.

The U16C offers a simple 7-day programming with buttons hidden behind hinged doors on the thermostat face.  Features include a backlit screen and a summer switch allowing the heating to be switched off without losing the programme.  The U16C can switch loads up to 3.4kW.

The T16C is available with white, black or silver surrounds.  The thermostat provides ultra-simple 7-day programming as well as an energy use monitor.  When required, air temperature can be controlled by an IP65 rated, remote-mounted wall-sensor (T16R) which is suitable for bathroom installation.

The T16C can switch loads up to 3.6kW

Wireless Control

Different combinations of three standard control components provide a number of convenient wireless control systems for underfloor heating.

The WSB-1 relay box is generally mounted at low level and is suitable for installation in any room including bathrooms.  Each relay box is supplied with a floor probe and will control heating according to the wireless signals it receives from the WST-1 thermostat and/or the WSP-1 central programmer.

The WSB-1 can switch loads up to 3.6kW.

The WST-1 programmable thermostat is battery powered and can be wall-mounted or simply placed in a convenient location using the small stand provided.  The thermostat can send a signal to up to four WSB-1 relay boxes.

When used with the WSP-1 central programmer, the thermostats programmable functions are superseded and it will act primarily as a wireless air sensor although it will still provide a temporary override function

The WSP-1 is a compact, touchscreen device providing individual programmable control for up to 24 heating zones.  Generally a heating zone would be an individual room. 

The combination of a single WSP-1 central programmer and the appropriate number of WST-1 thermostats and WSB-1 relay boxes will provide completely flexible control of every room in property from a one location.

Selecting the required mat or mats for a room is a simple four step process.

Check floor surface

M Series heating mats are most commonly installed under tiles either in flexible self-levelling compound or directly into the tile adhesive.  However M Series heating mats are frequently used with other floor surfaces such as carpet, vinyl, laminate and engineered wood with the heating mat being completely covered in a flexible self-levelling compound which is allowed to dry before the floor surface is applied.

If there is any doubt about the suitability of any given floor surface for use with underfloor heating, confirmation should be sought from the flooring supplier.

Choose between standard output, high output or low output mat
Standard Output (150W/m²)

Other than in exceptional circumstances, standard output mats will provide a sole source of heat in a room

High Output (200W/m²)

High output mats should be selected when one of the following applies:

  • A room has exceptionally high heat losses (this may apply to some conservatories)
  • A rapid heat up is required perhaps because a room is rarely used
  • It is only possible to heat a small percentage of the total floor area
Low output (100W/m²)

Low output mats are often specified for properties with high levels of insulation.  The use of low output mats reduces the power demand for any given room and means that larger areas can be controlled by a single thermostat without the need of a contactor.

Select the correct size mat or mats

The objective is generally to cover as high a percentage of the free floor area as possible.  The free floor area is defined as the floor area not occupied by permanent fixtures such as kitchen cabinets and shower trays.  As a rule of thumb, we suggest selecting a mat with a total area approximately 10% less than the total free floor area.  This will allow for perimeter spacing and ensure easy installation.  In larger rooms it is common practice to install more than one mat.

Select insulation boards
F-Board - two sizes

F-Board

To limit downward heat loss and to significantly improve economy, the use of F-Board insulated tile backer board is highly recommended.  The use of F-Board insulation is particularly important when heating mats are installed on top of an un-insulated concrete slab.  F-Board is available in two thicknesses: 6mm and 10mm.  We recommend using 10mm board except when it is vital to keep the floor height to a minimum.  Each board covers an area of 0.72m².  Therefore to select the correct number of boards, simply divide the total floor area by 0.72.

F-board is lightweight and easily cut to shape.
