The Project
The newly opened Mad Swans in the South Downs features 10 covered driving range bays, designed for year-round use. To keep golfers comfortable in colder weather without heating the open surrounding area, 13 HWP2-B IP55-rated patio heaters were installed, each controlled by a TS-7 push-button timer. This allows heating to be used only where and when required.

Project Summary
The newly opened Mad Swans in the South Downs features 10 covered driving range bays, providing golfers with a dedicated space to practise throughout the year. With the facility designed for use in all seasons, a heating solution was required to keep golfers comfortable during colder weather without attempting to heat the large, exposed area around the bays.
The installation comprises 13 × HWP2-B IP55-rated patio heaters, together with 13 × TS-7 push-button timers. This provides individual control of the heating, allowing warmth to be provided only where and when it is required.

The Specification
A driving range presents a very different heating challenge to a conventional indoor leisure space. Each bay can be occupied independently, meaning one golfer may be using a bay while several others remain empty. The heating system therefore needed to allow each area to be controlled individually rather than operating as one large heating system.
Attempting to heat the air would therefore be ineffective, particularly in an exposed environment where warmed air would quickly be lost to the surrounding area. The solution needed to provide direct heat to the golfer, while being simple to operate and suitable for an outdoor environment. Individual control was also important to ensure energy was not being used to heat unoccupied bays.
The Units Specified
The solution uses 13 HWP2-B shortwave radiant patio heaters, each providing 1.5kW of heating. The heaters are positioned to direct radiant heat towards the areas occupied by golfers, providing warmth while they are standing at the tee or sitting and watching friends use the bay.
Shortwave halogen heaters are particularly suited to this type of application because they heat people and surfaces directly rather than attempting to raise the temperature of the surrounding air. Each heater is paired with a TS-7 push-button timer, allowing golfers to activate the heating when required and ensuring it is not left running unnecessarily.
A Successful Installation
The system was installed in June 2026 and has already proved a successful addition to the new driving range. The combination of direct radiant heating and individual push-button control provides a simple way of keeping golfers comfortable without unnecessarily heating unoccupied bays.
As temperatures fall through the autumn and winter, the system will allow Mad Swans to continue providing a comfortable golfing experience throughout the colder months, helping the facility make full use of its driving range throughout the year.
