The Project
The Directors at Derby County Football Club identified that an unsatisfactory heating system in their concourses was limiting potential sales from their food and drink outlets. BN Thermic were tasked with designing a new heating system which created a warm environment for fans to make them more likely to stay for food and drink after games.
The Concourses
Heating the concourses with traditional fan/convector heating systems would have been highly impractical as the concourses are open to the elements. The turnstiles and stairs lead to the pitch meaning any warm air would escape. The only way to warm fans would be to localise heat with short wave quartz halogen heaters.

Quartz heaters heat people directly and not surrounding air making them ideal for unenclosed areas like Derby’s concourses.
The heaters are also instantly effective meaning you do not have to pre heat the concourses. This is a huge energy saving benefit and ideal for a large, intermittently used areas.

The Design
Our design required a lot of attention as we were heating two concourses the length of the pitch! In the end we specified 66 x 3kW quartz halogen heaters to be suspended on the ceiling throughout the concourses. The installer did an excellent job securing the heaters in a grid ceiling with custom brackets.
To keep running costs to a minimum, we designed a bespoke control system consisting of 18 x soft start control boxes and switches. These control boxes allowed the Directors to control the heating system from a single point and switch the heaters down to 1.5kW in warmer months. Click here for info on our MC-1 control boxes.

The finished project was a huge success and the design was spot on.
Derby’s Directors were very pleased with the outcome and kindly let us visit the stadium upon completion.
